Sports injuries

The London Podiatry Centre has been the sports injury centre of choice for several London Premiership football teams since 1991. The Centre's clinicians also provide expert advice to athletic footwear manufacturers and elite athletes from the worlds of golf, dance, running, rugby and tennis.

It is a simple fact that men and women who enjoy sports - whether professional or amateur - suffer more foot-related sports injuries. Running can increase the pressure on the foot by three or four times body weight. The twisting, jumping and physical collisions common in many sports place even greater stresses on the feet and biomechanical system. The cause of many sports injuries is a gradual or sudden change to the body's biomechanics.

The London Podiatry Centre specialises in biomechanics. It is the only podiatric clinic in the UK to employ Vicon, the world's most advanced optical motion capture system for biomechanical assessment.

The London Podiatry Centre's full range of sports injury treatment and prevention services includes:

  • 'Shoe Clinic' and Sports Preparedness Consultation - Choosing the wrong footwear or ignoring a minor foot ailment can have a disastrous impact on foot function, especially for a person taking up a sport for the first time. A sports preparedness consultation provides patients with a complete biomechanical evaluation and assesses and recommends training shoes, splints, braces and orthoses to minimize the likelihood of sports injury.

  • Gait Analysis for Sports Injury Diagnosis - Our two and three dimensional gait assessments identify patterns of biomechanical function that may be the cause of a sports injury. A gait analysis combined with an evaluation of footwear and sports habits very often reveals the cause of a foot-related injury or source of pain, whereas a simple x-ray or generalized medical investigation would not.

  • Holistic Sports Injury Treatment and Rehabilitation - London Podiatry Centre Sports Injury treatment plans may include footwear guidance, orthoses created with the F-Scan pressure measurement system, exercise therapy and possible invasive treatments such as injection therapy and foot surgery. Treatment plans are often created in collaboration with chiropractors, physiotherapists, medical consultants, osteopaths and other medical professionals who work closely with the Centre.

  • Foot surgery - For some patients, foot surgery or ankle surgery may be the best treatment for restoring normal function to the foot and lower leg. Foot surgery is conducted by the London Podiatry Centre's director and consultant podiatric surgeon, Ron McCulloch (B.Sc, F.C.Pod.S). Mr. McCulloch offers surgical appointments at the London Podiatry Centre and at The Harley Street clinic in central London.
